Synlogic is powering the microbiome with a new class of medicines called ‘synthetic biotics’.
We are a biopharmaceutical company bringing patients innovative medicines that are designed to take action from the microbiome to correct metabolic dysfunction to treat disease. Our synthetic biotics are engineered probiotic bacteria that perform specific metabolic functions from the gut microbiome to correct missing or dysfunctional metabolic activities throughout the body.

We are able to rapidly translate this groundbreaking science and technology into medicines that have the potential to change the lives of people with rare genetic metabolic diseases and eventually more prevalent conditions.
Our experienced team has built a drug discovery platform that brings the power of synthetic biology to the microbiome to rapidly create medicines that correct dysregulated metabolic processes to treat a wide range of diseases. Synlogic programs synthetic biotics with metabolic capabilities that are derived from knowledge of metabolic pathways with established links to disease. Synthetic biotics are designed to drive therapeutic effects throughout the body from a point of origin in the microbiome. In addition to a library of exclusive synthetic biology components, our industry-leading platform blends unique know-how and expertise in microbial engineering and physiology, state-of-the-art metabolic gene circuitry, design of regulatory genetic switches and proprietary assays and disease models.
Our proprietary pipeline is currently focused on drug candidates for rare, genetic metabolic diseases. Our two lead programs address orphan genetic diseases of the liver where our synthetic biotic medicines complement enzyme deficiencies by adding select metabolic capability to the microbiome. In addition to our internal proprietary pipeline focused on orphan diseases, we plan to leverage our platform to pursue drug discovery and development programs in major diseases through strategic partnerships. As a part of this strategy, we recently announced a collaboration with AbbVie to apply Synlogic’s proprietary platform to create innovative synthetic biotics for the treatment of certain forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
