Description

Job Description

Formulation Development at Vertex seeks a dedicated scientist to join a team in San Diego whose goal is to discover, develop, and commercialize therapies for patients with serious diseases. The incumbent will work alongside our innovative staff of preclinical formulators, conducting experiments that allow our research teams to select drug candidates for clinical evaluation. The preformulation function is part of the global Formulation Development organization, a critical R&D function enabling the manufacturing of dosage forms along the complete development timeline from molecule selection to commercial. The primary responsibility for this position is to enable candidate selection within Vertex's promising pipeline of small molecules. The candidate will be responsible for exploring the formulation space for supporting a variety of preclinical studies to advance molecules to the clinic. The candidate is expected to help lay the foundations for future clinical development by successfully executing developability assessments and robust experimental physicochemical characterization of molecules and prediction of in-vivo bioperformance using modeling tools. The candidate will collaborate extensively with colleagues in discovery biology and chemistry.

The ideal candidate has mastered the fundamentals of chemistry and physics and has direct experience in a research laboratory. The candidate must comfortably take the initiative, be curious, and show resilience in solving complex problems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Development of various formulations including oral, and intravenous of small molecule drug candidates to support early PK and pharmacology studies.
  • Development of amorphous dispersion formulations for low solubility compounds
  • Conducting preliminary physicochemical properties (e.g., solubility, and stability in bio-relevant media) screens of small molecules of drug candidates
  • Independently design and execute experiments and interpret analytical data to meet established project timelines for molecule selection and advancement
  • Maintain accurate and complete laboratory notebook in real time
  • Perform basic statistical description of experimental data
  • Comply with all relevant ethical, safety, and training procedures
  • Communicate and present their data to cross-functional teams in a clear fashion that allows critical decision making
  • Transfer of technical knowledge to contract research sites (CRO) for preclinical studies

The successful candidate will possess:
  • Sound knowledge of physical organic chemistry principles including solubility, ionization and association/dissociation constants and hands on experience with collecting experimental data for the same
  • Proven ability to apply the principles of the basic sciences, such as physical and organic chemistry, thermodynamics, and materials science, to preformulation development, using a rational, scientific approach
  • Have the ability to influence project activities by providing critical scientific input at team meetings
  • Hands on experience with material characterization using thermal methods (DSC, TGA, and DVS), XRPD, IR/Raman spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and particle size analyses as well as experience with running HPLC assays.
  • Strong technical writing skills as evidenced through relevant publications in peer reviewed scientific journals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Successful and efficient multitasking and working on a few projects concurrently

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences and 0-3 years of productive, relevant industrial and or post-doctoral work experience, or M.S. (or equivalent degree) with 3+ years of productive, relevant industry work experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Skills in manufacturing Spray Dried Dispersion formulations of small molecule compounds
  • Experience working with characterization of poorly soluble compounds
  • Conducting preliminary form and salt screen. Hands-on knowledge in form and salt selection methods.
